Asian College of Teachers Strengthens Workplace Safety through POSH Training

21st December 2023

Asian College of Teachers (ACT) took a significant step towards fostering a safe and inclusive work environment by conducting a Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) training session at its Kolkata center on December 19, 2023. The training led by Ms. Jhuma Bhattacharyya, a seasoned HR practitioner and certified POSH trainer, aimed at empowering employees with essential knowledge and awareness about sexual harassment in the workplace.

The training covered a spectrum of critical topics. Attending employees delved into the nuances of the POSH Act 2013, gaining insights into the legislative framework that governs workplace safety. Historical context was provided through the exploration of landmark cases such as the Bhanwari Devi case and the Vishaka Guidelines, illuminating the objectives of the Act.

The application of the Act was discussed, emphasizing the differentiation between the organized and unorganized sectors and the formation of internal committees to handle complaints effectively. The training also addressed the prevalence of sexual harassment in workplaces, dissecting the commonality of such incidents and analyzing the reasons behind underreporting.

Legal aspects were explained, providing attendees with an overview of Indian laws addressing sexual harassment. Definitions of key terms, such as aggrieved woman/person and respondent, were outlined to enhance understanding. The training also focused on identifying various forms of harassment; including verbal and non-verbal gestures, unwelcome behaviour, quid pro quo, and malicious surroundings. Real-world insights were shared through case studies, offering practical perspectives on dealing with complex situations. Participants gained an understanding of how internal committees function, from their structure to the procedures involved in handling complaints and reporting.

The training also explored the consequences of sexual harassment, emphasizing the measures that can be taken against such behaviour. Safeguards against reprisal actions were discussed to ensure a protective environment for those who come forward with complaints.

Attendees were guided on being compliant with POSH laws, and the tangible benefits of POSH training for individuals and the organization were underscored. ACT's initiative to conduct POSH training reflects its unwavering commitment to creating a secure and respectful workplace, fostering an environment where employees can thrive without fear of harassment. The training equipped ACT staff with the knowledge and tools to actively contribute to maintaining a positive and harassment-free workplace culture.
